2017 ISFL Individual Championships

On Saturday, January 28th, Hackley competed in the 2017 Independent School Fencing League Individual (ISFL) Championships, hosted at Horace Mann. Approximately 157 girl and boy fencers competed in three weapons: epee, foil and saber.
Hackley fencers competed with great spirit and enthusiasm, resulting in eight fencers receiving medal for their performance.

Leading our team and the boys epee squad was sophomore, Joshua Zhang who became the 2017 League Individual Epee Champion over a field of twenty three fencers. Josh won an exciting gold medal bout 9-8 over Lucas Hsing of Masters as time ran out. He has a current national ranking of 27th in the Cadet Under 17 division.

The girls foil competition saw two Hackley fencers earn Bronze. Senior Camille Butterfield tied for third place along with eighth grader Ella Boodell. Camille lost to silver medalist Eunice Bae of Horace Mann in her semi-final bout and Ella took on the gold medalist Alexia Giloli also of Horace Mann in a hard fought 15-12 loss. Ella’s current national ranking is 47th in the youth 14 division.

Other stellar medal-worthy performances include junior Tyler LaRoche placing seventh in the girls epee competition. She lost 15-8 to the eventual silver medalist. Eighth grader John “Max” Bryant placed seventh in the boy’s foil competition after losing in the quarter finals to the silver medalist. Junior Hanna Mark placed sixth in girls saber. Sophomores Raghav Chopra and Jack Chen placed sixth and seventh respectively in the boys saber competition.

The league members include: The Chapin School, Hackley School, Horace Mann School, The Masters School, The Marymount School, Riverdale Country School, Rye Country Day School, and St. Ann’s School.
