Excelsior! Hackley Classics students truly live the New York State motto

This year, Hackley Latin and Greek students once again competed with their peers across the US and around the world in a number of linguistic contests. Some of these occurred in the snowiest days of March, and we wondered whether they would take place at all!
But back to November, and the National Classical Etymology Exam. At the Advanced level, Julia Stewart-Wood and Owen Friesen took home silver medals, and Jasmine Bayrooti, Olivia Selmonosky, Georgia Panitz, and Garrett Towne won bronze. At the Intermediate level, Asha Dhakad and Sam Perlman were our gold medalists, and Max Mallett, Carter Myers, Joshua Zhang, Tajah Burgher, Rachel Troy, Josh Gluckman, and Frances Schaeffler won silver, and Chris Sun and Emmy Wenstrup took home bronze. Middle Schoolers Thomas D. and Sid S. won gold and bronze respectively.

On the Medusa Myth Exam, administered this year in the fall for the first time, Thomas D. was awarded a bronze medal, and Sid S. the Corona Olivae. In the Upper School, Sam Perlman won a Corona Laurea, and Rachel Troy, Ariana Kyimpopkin, and Julia Stewart-Wood won the Corona Olivae.

Greek students Bea McColl and Georgia Panitz were awarded Merit ribbons on the Elementary Attic exam, and Sarah Schwidel won a high honors ribbon. Amanda Stern achieved a Merit award on the Intermediate Attic exam. A number of students entered creative pieces in Latin, ranging from essays to short stories to cartoons, in the annual SCRIBO contest sponsored by ASCANIUS: The Youth Classics Institute. Julia Stewart-Wood received a ribbon acknowledging her top score among the Hackley entries.

The National Latin exam is taken by over 150,000 students in the US and in countries from Italy to Ghana, New Zealand to Greece. Hackley students performed exceptionally well this year. In the Middle School Zara H., Advith S., John C., and Afsana D. were recognized with the certificate for the Intro exam. Thomas D., Alexandra D., Cate G-P, and Alexander G. won gold medals, Sid S., Catherine L., and Francesca A. won silver. Mac W., Michael L., Austin B., and Mary R. were awarded Magna Cum Laude. Ella B. won a Cum Laude award. Thomas D. achieved a perfect paper for which he was awarded a special certificate.

In the Upper School, gold medals went to Tajah Burgher, Ying Ku, Luke Malcolm, Asha Dhakad, Sam Perlman, Carter Myers, Ariana Kyimpopkin, Matt Fisch, and Jasmine Bayrooti. Julia Stewart-Wood won a special book award to recognize four consecutive gold medals. Silver medals were awarded to Nate Braus, Alex Evangelidis, David Jiang, Emmy Wenstrup, Cole Wyman, Chris Sun, and Laura Walter-McNeill. Helen Sileshi, Frances Schaeffler, Matt Jean, Paola Garcia, Owen Friesen, Spencer Diaz, and Garrett Towne won Magna Cum Laude awards. Kathy Fan, Evangeline Coffinas, Josh Gluckman, Max Mallett, and Bridget Barsanti won Cum Laude.

In and out of the classroom, exciting activities were taking place. Latin 3 and Latin 1 students made mosaics, under the watchful guidance of Claudia DeSantis. Adrianne Pierce led her intrepid archaeologists down to the campus dig site for another season; we found a good deal of pottery which we can now identify as former Hackley dining room china, as well as glass and an actual coin! Latin 4 students ran the site, but Chinese 5 and Latin 8 classes each had a turn to dig.

Latin 6 performed their annual rendition of “Agricola Romanus”, complete with annual posters and noises, for the 5th grade; the 5th graders also had a chance to talk to Latin students in the Middle and Upper School Divisions at special table displays in late April. Latin 8, Latin 1, and Latin 4 students produced podcasts on topics from the Gallic Campaigns to Roman travel to the Muses. Everyone had a chance to play teacher during “Teach Me” week around Spring Break.

Finally, the Greek 1 and 2 students visited the Onassis Cultural Center in Manhattan to see the exhibit entitled “The World of Emotions”. They enjoyed an authentic Greek lunch as well.

Please join us in lauding Hackley’s Classics scholars for their outstanding achievements this year.
