Computer Science Ed Week - Fun was had by all!
Hackley students celebrated Computer Science Education Week from December 4th through December 8th with a number of activities and events taking place over the five days.
During the week all lower school students worked with the Hour of Code tutorials during their regularly scheduled computer class. Our middle school computer labs were open during workshop and the ASK study hall time on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, and students who had completed their homework were invited to enjoy the Hour of Code tutorials under the guidance of a computer teacher.
During lunch periods on Wednesday and Thursday an interactive display was presented in the Grille Room. Students were invited to play computer games and apps that were developed and programmed by Hackley students in grades 8-12, as well as watch our 3D printer in action. Upper school 11th and 12th graders, in the custom t-shirts they designed, visited lower school computer classrooms to buddy up with a lower schooler while they coded together. Upper school students were also invited to participate in the international Hour of Code event.
Hackley parents may remember that this event is sponsored by Code.org, an organization that supports increasing awareness for the need to teach computer science in schools. We at Hackley have a special connection with Code.org as it was founded by Hackley alums Hadi Partovi ‘90 and Ali Partovi ‘90. The Hour of Code event invites students from across the globe to participate in a minimum of one hour of computer programming during this week. More than 100 million students and teachers have either participated in the Hour of Code or are involved with one or more of the courses offered by Code.org. Code.org currently reports that more than 450 million hours of coding has taken place through this event. All of the
Hour of Code tutorials are web-based and will remain available long after CS Ed Week. All students and parents are invited to return to the site whenever they wish to enjoy these wonderful and creative coding challenges.
