Hackley Parent Dr. Daniel Andor Speaks to Independent Science Research Program and Computer Science Students

Dr. Daniel Andor P ’37 came to the Hilltop to give a guest lecture to Hackley’s ISRP and AP/Post AP Computer Science students. During his visit, Dr. Andor discussed his career trajectory from being in a music school to studying physics for his Ph.D. dissertation and becoming a software engineer at Google.

Dr. Andor spoke with students about his role as the lead on model development for AI Overviews, and he gave a fascinating overview of the technological steps that have been taken in the last decade to create the LLMs that are used today.

One student remarked, “The thing that was most interesting to me was how he wouldnt give up his interests. He knew that he loved music and then decided to combine that with his interest in science. Also, I liked how he was persistent in trying to get the position he wanted at Google. He put in the work by going to journal clubs and getting himself noticed, and, in the end, he was rewarded for it.”

All alumni and parents with present or past experiences in scientific research have a standing invitation to come and visit the Independent Science Research Program. Our future scientists love hearing your stories, and these talks are formative to their careers. If you are interested, please reach out to Dr. Andrew Ying at aying@hackleyschool.org.
