Hackley Unveils First Female Faculty "Gargoyles"
On Thursday, Dec. 12, Hackley unveiled its first female "gargoyles" in honor of computer science teacher and the Dial advisor Anne Budlong and math and science teacher Kerry Clingen, acknowledging their more than 40 years (and counting!) of service to the School.
The honor of "gargoylehood" was established in 2003 by then Head of School Walter Johnson for faculty who achieve tenure of at least 40 years on the Hilltop. Hackley has worked with local sculptor Bob Carpenter, who trained at the German State Woodsculpture School in Oberammergau, Germany, and at the Master School for Stone Sculpture, Cutting & Technology in Freiburg, Germany, to design each gargoyle.
In 2005, the images of retired Hackley teachers Randy McNaughton (46 years), John McAuliffe (44 years), and Walter Schneller (42 years) became part of Hackley’s architecture. Over the next several years, gargoyles for Rob Pickert (45 years), Doug Clark (41 years) and Phil Variano (41 years) were also added.
Congratulations, Ms. Budlong and Ms. Clingen!
